At Friendship, Inc. we believe
that spirituality permeates everything we do. One's spirit is that
which makes one who he/she is. It is the essence of our being. It
is what gives us life, energy and the will to live. When we laugh,
cry, trust, love, feel afraid, angry or alone, it is because our
spirit has been touched in some way. Everything we do in our service
to the people we serve affects them spiritually.
|
| There
are many aspects to spirituality: our home life, work life, relationships
with others and leisure activities. Often in society, spirituality
is seen as only having to do with one's faith response or a relationship
to a church community. From the above, it is evident that at Friendship,
Inc. we see one's religion, faith tradition or church community as
part of spirituality but not as the whole of it. |
| At Friendship,
Inc. we work to assist staff in the understanding of the above so
that everything they do with the people we serve is seen as an integral
part of nourishing their spirituality. We do respect the individual
faith traditions of the people we serve and make efforts to assist
them in being a part of a church community of their choice. We work
with local churches in recruiting volunteers to become "church
companions" for those we serve. |
 |
| The area
of suffering, illness and death is difficult for any of us to understand.
We make every effort to support the people we serve when sickness
and death are part of their lives. Periodically classes are held for
them and staff to learn about death and dying and the grief process. |
|
Facilitating the above for the
people we serve and offering training to staff in a greater understanding
of spirituality is the role of the Coordinator of Spiritual Services
at Friendship, Inc.
